However, during the late spring, fireflies are active in the northeast Florida Timucuan Preserve. Come join us on the Fort George Island hiking trail for a stroll through the three-mile loop. As we start out, it will still be daylight so we may look at some of the flora along the trail. As the light fades (it will almost be a new moon), we should begin to see fireflies. In addition to fireflies, we may see (and hear!) bats, birds, owls and other nocturnal creatures. And, dare I say, we may also encounter some of the ghosts that are said to inhabit the island. Participants should dress for cooling evening temperatures, wear closed-toed shoes, carry a bottle of water and bring insect repellent as the mosquitos will be joining us. You may want to bring a flashlight. Park in the parking lot across from the Ribault Club. It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted. The initial goal is 20 million acres of native plantings in the U.S. This represents approximately ½ of the green lawns of privately-owned properties.
